After many years of vacancy, the city will be removing the old municipal building at 26 Union Street South to make way for Novi Lofts, our third mixed-use development downtown, across the street from the new City Hall. Considering this lot's unique location sandwiched between Union Street South and Market Street we will pay special attention to the integration of the retail units into the surrounding environment which will be important for the success of the future retail tenants. For example, providing wider sidewalks and outdoor street level terraces for retail and allowing for private use of such spaces helps to bring activity generators to the exterior of the project in a way that engages the general public and pulls it in. We will be following closely the Union Street streetscape plans that the city is working on.
